Set within a story lovingly told by a grandfather to his granddaughter, Young Medicine Man begins in 1876 when a sixteen-year-old boy leaves Liverpool aboard a cargo ship bound for America. Drawn by adventure and dreams of finding gold, he travels west with an experienced prospector named Jeremiah. But when tragedy strikes and leaves him injured and alone in the wilderness, his hopes of fortune and success appear to have been shattered.

His life takes an unexpected turn when he is rescued by White Feather, a wise Native American elder whose unfamiliar way of seeing life initially leaves the young traveler bewildered. As their friendship grows, White Feather introduces him to a deeper understanding of thought, love, gratitude, forgiveness, and the unity of the spiritual and physical worlds. Warm, humorous, and filled with adventure, Young Medicine Man is a story of friendship and awakening — and of discovering that life’s greatest treasures may not be the ones we originally set out to find.

This manuscript has never been published. It is recorded here so the account of his writing is complete.
